A recent report written by McAfee in conjunction with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates that the global cost of cybercrime is $600 billion annually. Cybercrime creates a digital underground web that attacks not only individual citizens globally but the private and public sectors, national infrastructure, academia, and much risk to the financial sector. Criminal abuse of technology has allowed human trafficking and child online exploitation to scale rapidly. The private sector suffers significant losses annually due to cyber criminal activity which can even include complex attacks to individual company supply chains.

Cybercrime can include a variety of technology driven crimes such as the hacking of confidential data, ransomware, and identity theft but more broadly can be linked to other forms of transnational organized crime such as terrorism, child pornography, and human, drugs, arms, and wildlife trafficking. The webinar will examine how cybercrime is fueling a digital underground economy while making the link with human trafficking, as well as promising practices and partnerships from the private sector to address these criminal linkages. The discussion will cover a range of perspectives from experts working to combat cybercrime through technological innovations and approaches such as artificial intelligence and looking at cyber activity around major sporting events.

This webinar is the 6th and final webinar in the 2018 RESPECT webinar series, “The Human Trafficking – Organized Crime Nexus: Intersections, Vulnerabilities, and Analysis for the Private Sector.” This webinar series explores how human trafficking can intersect with other forms of organized crime and provide promising practices, strategies, and responses to alleviate further vulnerabilities for the private sector.
