About HBBS

The Host Based Security System (HBSS) baseline is a flexible, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)-based application. It monitors, detects, and counters against known cyber-threats to Department of Defense (DoD) Enterprise. Under the sponsorship of the Enterprise-wide Information Assurance and computer Network Defense Solutions Steering Group (ESSG), the HBSS solution will be attached to each host (server, desktop, and laptop) in DoD. The system will be managed by local administrators and configured to address known exploit traffic using an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and host firewall. DISA PEO-MA is providing the program management and supporting the deployment of this solution.

We’ve gotten to the stage where we need to start providing test results for the implementation of our airgapped system. From this new information, it looks like we are required to use HBSS as our host-based intrusion prevention system. I was expecting that this would be the required solution on SIPRNet, but not on the airgapped system. So now we need to accelerate our plans once again on obtaining the software.

From what I can tell, “HBSS” just refers to COTS McAfee software, but I need to determine which components are required. McAfee does not refer to their own software as “HBSS,” so this is more difficult than anticipated. This seems to be a situation like how the software that DoD refers to as “ACAS” is known commercially as “Nessus.”
