U.S. Sen. Tom Carper has been concerned for years about cyber criminals whom he says have put the nation under “unrelenting attack.”

Next Congress, the Delaware Democrat will be in a position to do something about hackers who try to steal sensitive information or target critical infrastructure. Carper plans to make cyber security a top priority for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee when he becomes the panel’s chairman in January.

“I mean, it’s going on 24/7,” he said during an interview. “Making sure we’re addressing this and especially protecting our critical infrastructure, which could hamper our economic recovery and endanger a lot of lives, that’s got to be a top priority.”

This will be the first time Carper has chaired a full committee. He will succeed Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., who is retiring. Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is expected to take over the top Republican spot on the committee from Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.
