FTC Official Wants ‘More Concrete’ Cybersecurity Guidance

As companies look to improve their cybersecurity in the wake of the massive data breaches at Target Corp. and Neiman Marcus Group Ltd., Commissioner Maureen Ohlhausen of Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday she is looking to lend corporate America a hand.

Speaking during a discussion on “Privacy Principles in the Era of Massive Data” at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., the Republican commissioner said the FTC vigorously enforces basic data-security requirements for consumer data and has recommendations for businesses trying to bolster their cyberdefenses. But she thinks the FTC should do more.

“The FTC’s data-security enforcement framework is not perfect,” Ohlhausen said. “And personally, I would like to develop more concrete guidance to industry.”
