Commerce cybersecurity detection, prevention lacking, says IG

Several bureaus within the Commerce Department lack adequate capabilities to detect and stop cyber attacks in a timely manner, according to a recent security audit (pdf) released by the inspector general’s office.

The April 24 report also found that these bureaus are not effectively using governmentwide security services that could enhance their existing capabilities and also provide a first line of defense.

Auditors evaluated the cybersecurity effectiveness of four bureaus – Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Industry and Security, International Trade Administration and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office – to comply with the Federal Information Security Management Act, which requires agencies to establish incident response capabilities.
