IS COMMUNITY HEALTH HACK THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMEL’S BACK?: A Chinese hacking team’s theft of millions of records from a hospital chain could be the blow that forces health care executives to invest in the equipment, expertise and information sharing that other industries have used to address cybersecurity threats, experts say, but the expense will be painful. “This should be a wakeup call to industry that cybersecurity needs to be ramped up,” said Lisa Gallagher, vice president for technology solutions at the Health Information and Management Systems Society. “This shows clearly that the risk is increasing rapidly. The value of this data for cyber-criminals is very high.” The theft of 4.5 million patient records — names, addresses, social security numbers — from Community Health Services is the biggest reported cyber-attack on health care.
