ICANN Calls for Studies On Possible Non-English Top Level Domains
The AP is reporting that ICANN has "called for studies by next September on technical, economic, trademark and other considerations related to new names." Issues to be studied include assessing whether non-English suffixes would create technical problems. If problems are not identified by the studies, non-English domains could be in use by 2005. However, although ICANN has called for the studies, it is not yet clear who will conduct the studies and what specific issues will be instructed to address. To ensure information quality and transparency, ICANN should:

  1. Award the studies through a public Request for Proposal process;

  2. Make the studies public as soon as possible; and

  3. Open a public docket to accept comments on the studies before acting on any study conclusions or recommendations.
