NGOs Petition EPA To Review Air Fresheners Under TSCA

Sierra Club, the NRDC and other NGOs petitioned the US Environmental Protection Agency to review air fresheners under the Toxic Substances Control Act. EPA has asked the public to comment on the petition by November 7, 2007. EPA explains the air freshener petition as follows:

“On September 20, 2007, the Sierra Club, the National Center for Healthy Housing, the Alliance for Healthy Homes, and the Natural Resources Defense Council petitioned EPA under TSCA section 21. The petitioners are concerned about risks to human health and the environment from exposure to air fresheners. They are petitioning EPA to assess and reduce these risks by exercising its authority under TSCA sections 8(c), 8(d), 4, and 6(a)(3).”

The petition claims that air fresheners can release into the air unhealthy levels of volatile organic compounds. EPA is legally required to grant or deny the petition by December 18, 2007.
